Halloween is coming up and lots of people love a scare around this time of year.  If this is you, you’re in luck.  Every year people from Encinitas and around San Diego come join the boy scouts in their annual Olivenhain  haunted house.

The eight rooms at the rooms at the Hotel Germania are designed by the Boy Scout Troop 2000 to give you a scare.  In addition to this spooky adventure, there are refreshments, carnival games, and a Halloween themed movie.  “We expect to see over 1,000 people over the three weekends that the Haunted house is open,” said Phil Kessler, a boy scout leader.

Although this event is put on by the boy scouts, many of its profits go to the Olivenhain Council. This money is built up by charging a five dollar fee to enter.  Although the amount of money raised varies from year to year, the profits will fund campouts and equipment for the troops as well. The boy scouts constructed three scare levels; scary, tame, and friendly.  All guides in the haunted house are family members of scouts or scouts themselves.

This is the 18th annual haunted house, but this does not mean it has always been put together at the Olivenhain Town Meeting House.  In the year 2000, Troop 2000 started their annual haunted house in a vacant store.  Since then the haunted house moved to Olivenhain, but it was a gradual process.  Phil Kessler has been working to produce the haunted house from the very beginning through its ups and downs, “It’s been fun to see how the Haunted Hotel has evolved over the years and how the community enjoys having a fun and safe place for kids to experience Halloween”.
