On the fifthteenth of February many organizations that work with therapy dogs came to Diegueno Middle School. These organizations are composed of volunteers with dogs who travel to different locations to relieve stress, help keep people calm, take minds off current issues, and make your day brighter.  Whether you like dogs or not, if you’re young or old, these dogs will put a smile on your face.

I was able to spend time with Lisa and her dog Max, who is a nine year old golden retriever.  Max is a therapy dog with the organization Alliance of Therapy Dogs.  This is a non-profit organization that has certified dogs who attend events.  To be certified as a therapy dog it is recommended you pass an AKC, American Kennel Club, training test.  Lisa said, “Although many dogs can pass this test, being a therapy dog is not for all dogs.  Two great qualities that make up a good therapy dog are they are good around other dogs and are okay with being touched.”

Once the dog has passed the test, they can then go to locations such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, college campuses, rehab centers, and airports.  It is beneficial for people to visit with therapy dogs because it has been proven to to lower their blood pressure and stress levels.  In many cases it can also be a cure for depression.  Besides the fact of making others happy, this organization allows you to feel happy too.  Lisa has been working from the very beginning with her dog, Max, to be a certified therapy dog, “My favorite part about this organization is seeing the smiles my dog puts on other people’s faces.”
