Mollie Tibbetts

Mollie Cecilia Tibbetts, 20 years old, went missing while jogging in her home town of Brooklyn, Iowa, on July 18, 2018. The police identified Christian Bahena Rivera, 24, as the killing suspect after a month long search for Mollie. The killing has since been grossly used as a platform for an anti-immigration promotion opportunity for politicians. This is due to the fact that Rivera happens to be an undocumented immigrant. Mollie Tibbetts’ father has addressed President Trump’s video tweeted, saying “A person came in from Mexico illegally and killed her. We need the wall, we need our immigration laws changed, we need our border laws changed. … This is one instance of many. We have tremendous crime trying to come through the borders.”

Tibbetts’ father thanked those politicians who did not use Mollie’s death to promote a political agenda, and disapproved of those politicians who ignored the family’s request to not use Mollie’s story for their own personal politics gain. “They have instead chosen to callously distort and corrupt Mollie’s tragic death to advance a cause she vehemently opposed. I encourage the debate on immigration; there is great merit in its reasonable outcome,” he continued, “But do not appropriate Mollie’s soul in advancing views she believed were profoundly racist.”

Tibbetts’ father gave a quote that summed up his views on the immigration debate for the opinion piece by the Des Moines Register in one sentence. “The person who is accused of taking Mollie’s life is no more a reflection of the Hispanic community as white supremacists are of all white people,”
