Is Diet Soda Actually Healthier for You?

By: Isabella Navales

Have you ever drank a diet soda, or wondered what’s really inside that can of soda that so many people like? According to Hannah Gardener, an epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, it’s not very good. Diet soda is advertised as a healthier version of regular soda, but is that actually true?

Six sweeteners that all go into diet sodas have been approved by the Food and Drug administration. These sweeteners are saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, neotame and advantame. Though the sweeteners are safe to consume, does not mean they are healthy for you. The artificial sweeteners are 200 times sweeter than sugar and above. One of them is even 20,000 times sweeter! Though some of the sweeteners claim to have zero calories, how do we know they aren’t lying?

2005, a study was conducted on diet soda. The study showed that the people who drank diet soda did not lose any weight, but instead they actually gained weight. In addition, during the study it was found that the people who were drinking diet soda were 48 percent more likely to have a stroke or heart attack. In the end, the study results were not strong enough to show a cause and effect for anything, but Hannah Gardener, the lady who conducted the experiment, said ¨I actually don’t think you should drink any soda at all.¨

So, maybe you will continue to drink diet soda, or maybe you won’t but every time you are about to drink any type of soda, consider everything inside that’s inside that can of soda, and how it could affect you.
