Boba is a tasty treat loved by people all over the world. Boba was originally created in Taiwan in the 1980’s. Boba are small, black, chewy balls that are made from gluten-free starch, which are extracted from the roots of cassava plants. It is usually put in the bottom of milk teas. Over the years, boba has gotten really popular and people all over the world are enjoying it. The thing that makes boba such a delight, is the unlimited types of drinks you can put it in. The possibilities are endless, you could put it in teas, milkshakes, and smoothies.

Sorry to all you boba lovers out there, but recently scientists have discovered that boba may contain cancerous chemicals! Researchers at University Hospital Aachen, have found traces of the carcinogenic chemical in boba. They also found some substances inside boba, that shouldn’t be in food at all. One substance that was found in boba is called a PBC. PBC’s are man-made organic chemicals that are toxic and have shown to cause cancer. So, next time if you’re thinking of having some boba, you might want to have a second thought.

Katie Codd, a 13 year old student a Diegueno Middle school, loves boba. Katie’s friend went to a boba shop once, and her friend offered some boba to her and she loved it. Katie is the one of many students at Diegueno Middle School, that love boba. The first boba drink that Katie ever had, was in a chocolate shake and it automatically became her favorite. She rated boba a 10 out of 10 stars and likes it especially in drinks. After I told her that boba may contain cancerous chemicals this is what she said, “ I feel really concerned and I don’t really want to eat boba anymore, but I think that I still might have a little bit of boba. For me to believe that boba can cause cancer, there needs to be many studies that prove that theory.”

Another student at Diegueno Middle School, Tori Tingum, has also had boba before and also really loves it. She is 12 years old and first found out about boba at 10 years old. Tori learned about boba from her aunt. One day her aunt was drinking boba in iced tea and offered it to Tori, who very much enjoyed it! Tori rates boba a 9 out of 10 stars because she feels like boba does not have a flavor and in the only taste good in drinks. Just like Katie, once Tori learned about boba causing cancer, she was also really concerned. Unlike Katie, Tori will not have boba again. “ No, I will not have boba again. I mean if it might be able to kill you, why would you have it?!”
