Ever since Taylor Swift’s new debut Look What You Made Me Do came out, the public has been going crazy.  Having always had a reputation for being petty, Taylor Swift tries to prove her self-awareness in her recent music video. However, according to critics, she has instead further proved herself a “snake.” The video is focused on Swift becoming a new, tougher version of herself. She makes several less-than subtle references to her dying reputation during the song. For instance, the video opens with a Zombie-Swift digging herself a grave, as if the old Taylor has perished. This idea is continuously reinforced throughout the song. At one point, she even pretends to answer the phone and says, “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? ‘Cause she’s dead.”

Through the entire song Swift has cliche lines that illustrate her as a melodramatic teenager, the opposite of her intentions. Taylor sings about her flaws and enemies, hoping to prove to the world that she knows what we think of her. Which is good, but that doesn’t exactly change anything. In fact, it has just reminded the media of Taylor’s inability to let go of any grudges, even the ones for which she was responsible. The song is sprinkled with disses and insults to people such as the Kardashians, Kanye West, and Katy Perry — people who have supposedly  “wronged” her.

Strangely enough, according to aficionados, the lyrics are not even the worst part of the song. It’s the actual melody and tune. Long live Old Taylor Swift and her catchy, repetitive jingles. Now New Taylor has moved on to a strange alternative rock mixed with electronic pop. Despite this all, Taylor Swift’s new single has become number one on the Top Songs Chart. No matter what Taylor Swift sings about, it seems as though she can’t help but stir up celebrity feuds.
