An Indonesian teen survived close to 50 days while floating on a unstable shack in shark infested ocean waters. Aldi Novel Adilang, age 19, had a lonely job of handling a floating fish trap. When the strong winds ripped the hut from its mooring in July it sent it floating in the Pacific Ocean. The teen boy was stranded on what it is called a rompong. His responsibility was to light lamps around the hut with a power generator to attract fish. The rompong did not have any paddles or engines. The hut floats in the middle of the sea but is anchored to a sea bed by ropes. He caught fish to eat but after he ran out of gas, he burned the rompong’s wooden fences to make a fire for cooking. The young teen drank by sipping water from his clothes that had been wetted by sea water. Every time he saw a ship or boat pass by Aldi’s hopes rose but more than 10 ships passed by without seeing him. Officials said that he had been scared and often cried while adrift. He cried while thinking about his family, fearing he would never get to see them again. At one point of his voyage the teen was being circled by sharks but all he could do was to pray for them to go away. Aldi ate fish and read his bible daily. Finally on August 31 Arpeggio caught a signal from the teen’s radio while passing him in the waters of Guam. He was given food and a haircut after taken aboard. The boat was docked in Japan on September 6 and the the teen eventually returned home. Aldi safely returned home and his mother celebrated Aldi’s safe return.

I interviewed people asking them questions related to this incident. I asked Casey Harper what would you do if you were stranded in the middle of the ocean? He said, “ I would try swimming to land after realizing I shouldn’t give up.’’ Another person who wants to be anonymous  responded to this question saying, “ I will try to find the nearest boat and scream for help.” If you were to be on a boat what would you bring? Synca Wennerstrom responded to this question saying, ¨I would bring food, water, a spear as a weapon, and floaties.” I also interviewed Lexi Masterson and she said, “I would bring a compass, dry food, a life jacket, and water.” What would you do if you were in this situations?
