On November 30th, Marriott International released information about the hack that left the personal details of up to 500 million guests compromised and ready to be manipulated.

Running more than 6,700 properties across the globe, Marriott International said that in September it received an alert that there was an attempt to access the database of its Starwood reservation system. Further investigation this month showed that unallowed access to personal information had been made around September 10.

Anyone who made a reservation for certain Starwood hotel brands as far back as 2014 to September of this year is at the mercy of the breach. During the investigation it was found that Starwood has had this intrusion for four years, but it had been unnoticed till now. The affected properties include Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels, St. Regis, Four Points, Aloft, Meridien, Tribute, Design Hotels, Elements and the Luxury Collection.

The hack is considered to be much larger than the one at Equifax, which occurred last year, and where information was stolen from 148 million people.  This is also the second major breach reported at Starwood, the first being in 2015 when its cash register systems were infiltrated.
