Many people tuned in for the 74th Golden Globes that aired on January 8, 2017. The award show celebrates the movies and television shows that premiered that current year. Other than the awards given to the cinematography, there was another award that was given to a someone  “for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment, the members wanted it to bear an internationally recognized and respected name.” according to the Golden Globes website. That award, named the Cecil B. deMille award, was given to Meryl Streep this year.

As a respected name in the entertainment industry, she made sure that the content in her speech was carefully chosen. She thanked many people who are close to her, but also talked about some of the hot political topics. Streep talked about how that almost everyone in the entertainment industry is “…crawling with outsiders and foreigners…” and if they all leave, there won’t be anything to watch. Also, she explained how a big name in the country had mocked a disabled reporter, and she said “It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.” Throughout her speech, she didn’t once mention Donald Trump’s name, but everyone inferred that it was him.

I personally admire Streep for all of her work and how she has always spoken out for others. Some think that her speech is overrated, but I think that since she has such a high platform, it is great that she is using it to enlighten others. Because of this, some people might have become stronger activists. You never know how much just a couple of words could do.
