This generation is definitely the generation of technology, such as Instagram, Twitter, Snap chat, and more. Most people have it. Social media can be looked at and used in different ways. It can be a place to be creative, a waste of time, or a place for cyberbullies to gather. Some people can go without social media for days, only using it once in awhile. However, some can barely go a day without checking it, and mindlessly scrolling down. It is also how most people get their news and updates on events. It is also a fun place to post things. Overall, it usually generates a positive response from people. “In this day and age, everyone has social media. Okay, maybe not everyone, but it would be weird not to have it,” comments Julia King, a seventh grader at Diegueno middle school.

What kinds of social media do kids have? “I have Snap chat, and Instagram, which I like being creative on,” answers Malloy Fitzsimmons, another seventh grader, “and getting likes makes me a happy person. It is exciting!” Most people thrill in getting likes on their photos, and some even create followers to make it look as if a lot of people are following them. “You can do lots on social media!” says Julia, “like stalking people, keeping up with current events, talk to your friends, and meet people online.” People use social media for different things, but it is a well-known fact that it can have some downsides. Malloy responded, “Well, of course, there is always a risk of cyber bullying. Also, people who you don’t know can see everything you are doing, and when you are doing it. It can be a bit creepy.”

In all, social media can be used for the better or for the worst. People can say things online that they would probably never say to the person’s face, and generates misunderstanding. However, if you are smart about how you use it, social media can be a creative experience. There is a borderline between being obsessed and just using it for fun.
