Los Angeles has decided to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus day celebrates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the new world on October 12, 1492. Columbus day became an official holiday in 1937 but Los Angeles has decided to change that. “The motion, let me be clear, is not about erasing history,” said Supervisor Hilda Solis “This is about understanding that for centuries, America’s ancestors oppressed certain groups of people. And while we can’t change the past, we can acknowledge and make that history right today.” This holiday is meant to celebrate Christopher Columbus but many are realizing that he shouldn’t be celebrated. 81 cities and states have declared Columbus day Indigenous people’s day, although Los Angeles is the largest city yet.

I interviewed Ms. Neklia to find out her opinion on the subject. I asked her if she thought that changing the name to Indigenous peoples day was a good idea and she answered with a definite yes. Then I asked her why she thinks that we have kept the name of this holiday the same for so long. She said that “I just think that not enough people know what Columbus really did and that we were taught in school that he was a good guy. Now more and more is coming out about him that he wasn’t really a good guy, he enslaved people, he killed people” She also explained that they ignored that in all the history books and that he got credit for things he didn’t really do. For example, people were already living in America so he couldn’t have discovered it and we knew the world was round way before Columbus declared that he discovered the world was round. In all, Christopher Columbus was responsible for many deaths and enslaved many people, and he got credit for a lot of things that he really didn’t do. In conclusion, this is why I agree with Los Angeles deciding to change the name from Columbus day to Indigenous People day.
