On October, 10 2017, the United States  men’s national soccer team played against Trinidad/Tobago to qualify for the 2018 world cup.  This was the final qualifying game and the United States needed to tie or win to qualify for the 2018 world cup in Russia.  Even though the game was played in Trinidad the U.S. team was favored to win.

In a nearly empty stadium, both teams were playing well. About 20 minutes into the game a Trinidad\Tobago player crossed the ball in front of  the U.S. goal.  Omar Gonzales, a U.S. defender, accidentally kicked the ball into his own goal.  The U.S. was down 1-0.  A few minutes later a Trinidad\Tobago player shot the ball from almost midfield.  The ball floated over the keeper’s head and into the net.  At half time the U.S. was down 2-0.

When the whistle blew to start the second half the pressure was on the U.S. team to score 2 goals.  U.S. forward Christian Pulisic scored an early goal in the second half giving the U.S. hope.  U.S was down one goal with plenty of time left in the game, but their shots on the goal barely missed.  One shot even hit the post and bounced out.  Toward the end of the game Trinidad\ Tobago pulled all of their players back to defense.  The U.S. pushed their players up to try to score the game tying score.  Finally the time ran out and U.S. was eliminated. They will not be going to the world cup next year.  The next year for qualifying is in 2022.  If you are a U.S. soccer fan it will be along wait.
