Black Lives Matter is a protest fighting for equal and justified rights for every black person. Recently it has gotten much more attention as deserved because of the recent killing of George Floyd. He was pulled over by cops because they believed he used a counterfeit $20 bill. Instead of approaching George calmly, he was attacked and killed, even though he wasn’t armed nor dangerous. After this more cases like this came to everyone’s attention, Breonna Taylor, shot eight times because cops believed she had drugs, yet she was unarmed and innocent. Stephon Clark, shot twenty times in his grandmother’s backyard because he was supposedly holding a gun, he had a cellphone in his hands. Tamir Rice was playing with a toy gun at a park, officers shot him and tackled his 14-year old sister, and waited for 4 minutes until they called the ambulance, he died in the hospital the day after. All of this happened, solely because of the color of their skin.
Racism hasn’t just been people get shot for being black but enforcing labor on them for no pay, also known as slavery. Slaves were popular during the 17 and 18th centuries, they would be stolen from their homes and taken to white people who purchased them through an auction. They were forced to work in unbearable heat for extended periods of time, and were treated so poorly, and were fed not even three times a day. Many people were for slavery, thinking that not having to do chores is so convenient, forgetting that other people have to suffer because of it. Some people were against it though, for example, Alexander Hamilton was against slavery. From the famous musical,” Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda, who played as Hamilton, said to his opponent in the first cabinet battle,” A civics lesson from a slaver, hey neighborYour debts are paid because you don’t pay for labor, “We plant seeds in the South. We create.” Yeah, keep ranting, we know who’s really doing the planting.” Although this isn’t a primary source, Lin explains Hamilton’s thoughts on slavery exceptionally. Thomas Jefferson and Washington had other thoughts, he had slaves, many of them. History has made them seem as innocent as they can get, but they were horrible people who took advantage of their slaves and made them work harder than a human can bear. Overall slavery was and will never be okay, and is one of the many reasons why black people have it unfair.
The list could go on about how unfair this world is, and if you aren’t a straight white male, we don’t like you. Overall nobody should be treated the way black, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, or practically any race that isn’t white should be treated. We should treat each other fairly and nobody is less than or better than everyone else, it should just be fair, but that will take years. We need to grow as a world and accept the people around us.
