Babe Ruth was a professional baseball player that passed away on August 16, 1948, at the age of 53 around 70 years ago. He played 22 seasons of Major League Baseball from 1914 to 1935. Ruth was just recently awarded a Medal of Freedom but, many are wondering “What took so long?”  The star, who was also known as “The Great Bambino” often made visits to orphanages and hospitals. He was different from other professional baseball players of his time, he was willing to play alongside black baseball players.

Babe Ruth is the 14th baseball player to be awarded the Medal of Freedom. However, why so late? Many agree, it is amazing that Babe Ruth has been recognized, but why did it take 70 years for this award to come into play? President Trump presented Babe Ruth the award saying, “He raised money and raised [the underworld], maybe that’s why it’s taken him a long time to get this award. He should have gotten it a long time ago. I said, ‘Babe Ruth hasn’t gotten it?’ We took care of that real fast.”

Babe Ruth’s grandson Terry Stevens, 66, received the medal in honor of his mother and Babe Ruth himself. “I’m grateful to President Trump that he finally recognized the Babe,” Stevens said. “God knows when it would have happened.”

Babe Ruth’s legacy lives on from his spot in the hall of fame to his newly awarded Medal of Freedom. Babe Ruth was not perfect, but he did make Americans happy during a time when happiness was near impossible to find.
