There’s been a lot of hype regarding the new 2020 live action Mulan movie. This movie is a remake of the 1998 original Mulan, where a woman of all people goes to war to save her father and bring honor to her family in China during the Han dynasty. The original Mulan was loved and cherished by many Disney fans, as well as becoming an official Disney Princess. Mulan is the face of girl power and perseverance, so some of the questions I think we’re all asking is, what are the changes? Any new or excluded characters? What are the good and bad details? But most of all, is it worth it?
Although there are reviews on the movie, an honest first hand opinion is always helpful. Ronin Macdonald, an eighth grader at Diegueno Middle School bought the movie for $29.99 the day it came out, September 4th. When asked if she liked the new Mulan, Ronin responded with,“No.” Some things Ronin said that were changed in the Mulan remake was Mushu, added witches, which she said was totally unnecessary, and got rid of the love story between Mulan and Li Shang, which Ronin said,“was a big part of it (the movie)”. I asked Ronin if there were any good parts of the movie and she replied with,“To be honest, I can only remember the bad parts”. The final comment drawn out of this interview was when questioned if you think anyone should pay for this new movie, she replied with,“I do not”.
Going back to the original question, is the 2020 live action Mulan worth the thirty dollars or should you just wait until December 4th, when it will be free for all subscribers of Disney Plus? According to Ronin, you shouldn’t get it, and it’s not worth it. The movie isn’t just a remake, it’s a replot. This is not insulting the actors of course, but what I’m focusing on is the plot, and compared to the original, the plot is not nearly as good. However, everyone has different opinions and maybe you’ll watch and love it. The only way to truly find out is to watch the film for yourself.
